Ovulation following unilateral ovariectomy in the California leaf-nosed bat (Macrotus californicus).

Ovulation occurred from the left ovary in all 5 bats that had had the right ovary removed and an implanting blastocyst was found in the left uterine horn in 2 of these bats. All ovulations in the control and sham-operated bats occurred from the right ovary.

Commerson's leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros commersoni) is the likely reservoir of Shimoni bat virus.

In this study we attempted to identify whether Commerson's leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros commersoni) is the reservoir of Shimoni bat virus (SHIBV), which was isolated from a bat of this species in 2009. An alternative explanation is that the isolation of SHIBV from H. commersoni was a result of spill-over infection from other species, particularly from the Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptia...

Compensatory ovarian changes, mast cell distribution and luminal structure changes following unilateral ovariectomy in rats

To follow-up the present study, 40 mature female rats were used. The animals were divided into test, control and sham groups. The rats in the test group were laparotomized and unilateral ovariectomy was done. On the 1st and 2nd met-oestrous after operation, the tissue samples were dissected out and processed for histological study. The intact ovary in the test group underwent a significant (P

Hearing in American leaf-nosed bats. IV: the Common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus.

We behaviorally determined the audiograms of three Common vampire bats (Phyllostomidae, Desmodus rotundus), a species specialized to exist exclusively on blood. The bats were trained to respond to pure tones in a conditioned suppression/avoidance procedure for a blood reward and a mild punisher for failures to detect the tones. Common vampire bats have a hearing range from 716 Hz to 113 kHz at ...

‘Compromise’ in Echolocation Calls between Different Colonies of the Intermediate Leaf-Nosed Bat (Hipposideros larvatus)

Each animal population has its own acoustic signature which facilitates identification, communication and reproduction. The sonar signals of bats can convey social information, such as species identity and contextual information. The goal of this study was to determine whether bats adjust their echolocation call structures to mutually recognize and communicate when they encounter the bats from ...
